So as usual it’s been far too long since I blogged but things have changed a lot recently so it is really about time I get better at this part.
So far 2016 has been very good to me. I started with a great trip down under and as well as playing some great tournaments I got to spend time with friends and family and some time in my favourite city, Melbourne. I arrived in time for the second week of the Australian Open tennis and got to watch my fellow Dunblane boys, Jamie and Andy Murray play some amazing tennis. I spent some time in the sandbelt area ticking some of the greatest golf courses off my bucket list. I played the Vic Open for the first time which was a lot of fun as it ran along side the men’s event so there was a different sort of atmosphere. After these first two weeks I played the normal LET/ ALPG swing and it was great.
After this trip there was a very long gap before the next event so I was able to spend a couple months working and teaching at Archerfield while also playing a few pro-ams which were great fun and I met lots of great people- one of the great things about this job is the people you meet along the way that you would probably never cross paths with otherwise.
Without a full card on the LET this year I decided to travel to Asia to play some golf and it proved to be a very worthwhile trip. Having never been, I travelled to Hong Kong to play the Hong Kong Ladies Open at Fanling- an incredible place. The weather was unlike anything I’d ever experienced before, so so hot and humid and so much rain, but the course never flooded until the last day. Some days they had 8″ of rain. Yes 8 inches in one day! I played very nice and apart from the finish in the second last round when admittedly I got excited seeing my name going to the top of the leaderboard, I played lots of really good golf. I finished 7th that week. The good thing about my trip to Asia is it will now allow me to play later in the year in some of the co-sanctioned events with the LET.
There was a time where I wasn’t sure what my plans are but I am really enjoying playing golf just now and despite there not being many events to play this year, the one I have played have been good. One of my best rounds came this year at the Scottish PGA Northern Open. Played at Royal Dornoch, a very tough links course, I had once of those moments where everything clicked and it felt amazing. I went out in 29 shots with 2 lip outs, I had 9 birdies and smashed he course record by 3, eventually signing for a 66- even with 2 bogies and a double- if I can get better at holding on until the end, it could be very very good.
Last month was once of my professional highlights. I won the WPGA championship. This is an event I have wanted to win since I started my PGA training but due to qualifying conditions of needing to be fully qualified and working a stipulated number of hours, so this was the first year I was eligible. I won in a play off with Suzanne Dickens after playing lots of great golf, 11 birdies in my two rounds at Frilford Heath.
So what now? Well, I have found myself in the algarve, somewhere I had never been before and now I’m here I don’t know why I’d never been before, it’s amazing. Based in Lagos at a beautiful 5* hotel, Cascade Wellness, I am working with Elite Golf Academy. Already with an academy in Kent specialising in working with elite golfers, we are now trying to build up golf tuition and custom fitting in the Western Algave. The golf courses are amazing, the facilities here at the academy are incredible, the biggest grass range I’ve seen, a great short game area, a large putting green and beautiful weather. To cap it off, the view from the driving range is over some cliffs and coves and over the ocean so it is a beautiful setting to work in and practice. It is our plan to create bespoke golf packages for golfing holidays, tuition and for the more serious golfer a full elite package of intense coaching, training, fitness and playing. I will also be arranging ladies weeks that will have golf, tuition, fitness and spa time so it is all very exciting.
In due course I will be putting up links to these golf breaks and trips but please get in touch if you are thinking a
Of a winter golf break and I can give a bit more information.
On the golfing front, my next event is the LET Access in the Azores so I best get some practice done in between everything else.
